1.

Dell XPS 13

default

Summary

The Dell XPS 13 is probably the smallest 13-inch ultrabook out there. And despite its slim-trim dimensions, Dell packs the XPS 13 with a lot of hardware firepower and features an excellent look, feel and design to propel it amongst the best ultrabooks available in the market.

Just like the Asus Zenbook UX31E, the Dell XPS 13 is yet another ultrabook that steps very close to mimicking the Apple MacBook Air’s look and design. The Dell XPS 13 has a plush silver-grey metal screen lid that complements its dark coloured base. The Dell ultrabook features rounded edges and minimalistic design to heighten its overall elegance and appeal. It’s a premium laptop through and through. It may not be as thin or light as the 11-inch MacBook Air or the Toshiba Portege Z830 (which weighs 1.11 kg), still the Dell XPS 13 is quite thin and its 1.35 kg frame is very easy to carry around.
This gives the Dell XPS 13 the impression of being a 13-inch laptop in a smaller 12-inch frame. It’s a noteworthy achievement and Dell’s right to make a big deal out of it. The Dell XPS 13 ultrabook has a Corning Gorilla Glass display; not only this, but the XPS 13's bottom panel is made of carbon fibre -- even the finishing and texture on the bottom panel feels rich and premium.

Screen, keyboard, touchpad

The Dell XPS 13’s keyboard is almost exactly similar to the Dell Adamo XPS 13, which had a very good keyboard. Likewise, the Dell XPS 13 features wide chiclet-styled backlit keys that are very well laid out and just a treat to type on. All the alphanumeric keys and frequently used keys like Space, Enter, Shift, Alt, etc, are accurately placed. Overall, we’re very impressed with the Dell XPS 13’s keyboard, it’s as great as any Lenovo ThinkPad laptop launched last year.

3.

Samsung Series 5 (Ivy Bridge) Ultrabook

The Samsung Series 5 Ultrabook has been updated with Ivy Bridge, and is better than ever! When we had reviewed the previous generation version, the overall package vs. the price made us slap the "Best Value" tag in the ultrabook comparison test. In a nutshell, it was excellent. With Ivy Bridge, it just moves that extra step towards outstanding, made even more relevant by the affordable price tag.
Clearly, the Samsung Series 5 isn't aiming to win any _which is the slimmest ultrabook_ competitions-336.jpg
Absolutely no sign of any hateful glossy finish!-336.jpg

Features & Specifications

This is where all the action is happening. Out of the window goes the Intel Core i5 – 2467M (Sandy Bridge) and in comes the Intel Core i5 – 3317U (Ivy Bridge). Same as earlier, the 6GB of RAM is carried forward. With Ivy Bridge on board, the integrated graphics also get a boost with Intel HD 4000. Samsung insist on giving us the goodness of a dedicated graphics chip as well, with the Nvidia GeForce GT 620M graphics. Just to refresh your memory, the previous version had the AMD Radeon HD 7550M graphics.

4.

Sony Vaio E-series notebook (SVE14A15FNB)

Sony VAIO SVE14A15FNB - 336 - 4.jpgSony VAIO SVE14A15FNB - 336 -2.jpg

Features & Specifications
On paper, the Vaio E-series does look quite powerful. This is powered by the Intel Core i5–2450M (2.5GHz) processor, with the Turbo Mode taking it to 3.1GHz. There is 4GB of RAM to help this along. Just to make it clear, this isn’t from the latest Ivy Bridge series of processors, but the previous gen Sandy Bridge one.

The graphics bit is handled by the Intel HD 3000 graphics and the AMD Radeon 7670M (1GB) graphics. The resultant performance is decidedly mid-range, something that we will explain in the performance section.

Sony has sent this laptop along with a 640GB hard drive, and while we cant really criticize that, it would have been ideal to have a 750GB drive, something the Toshiba Satellite L850 offers. Incidentally, the review unit shared with us didn’t have an OS restore partition, and the Sony website also does not specify if the laptop will be shipped with restore media or not.

5.

Toshiba Satellite L850

default

Features & Specifications
Power – the keyword. The Intel Core i7-3610QM quad-core processor powers the L850, clocked at 2.3GHz, with Turbo Boost mode taking it to 3.3GHz. The goodness doesn’t stop there, with 8GB of RAM added to the power package. This is definitely more powerful, at least on paper, than the Aspire V3, which has an Intel Core i5 clocking at 2.5GHz and 4 gigs of RAM.

In terms of graphics capabilities, both have almost equal potential, but stand in very different corners – Toshiba has the ATI Radeon 7670M chip with 2GB dedicated graphics memory, while the Acer Aspire V3 has the Nvidia GeForce GT630M also with 2GB dedicated graphics memory.

The 15.6-inch display on the Satellite L850 is absolutely brilliant. The brightness levels are quite high, and tend to act as an antidote for the slightly reflective nature of the display. oshiba’s Satellite L850 is slightly more future ready, with two USB 3.0 ports, instead of just one on the Acer Aspire V3.

6.

HP Folio 13

HP's first ultrabook to launch in India, the Folio 13, couldn't be more attractive. While the Asus Zenbook guns after the MacBook Air in every sense of the word (we don't want to call it a rip-off!), the HP Folio 13 manages to uphold its distinctive looks, style and design to resemble a product straight from HP's laptop portfolio.

7.

Acer Aspire V3

Acer Aspire V3-3-336.jpg

Features & Specifications

On paper, the Aspire V3 looks like a very powerful package. The spec sheet reads something like this – Intel Core i5-2450M clocking at 2.5GHz, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive, Nvidia GeForce GT630M (2GB) graphics and a 15.6-inch display.

The Aspire V3 comes with a Core i5-2450M clocking at 2.5GHz, with the Turbo Boost mode taking it up to 3.1GHz. In this day and age, 4GB of RAM seems a bit too less! Powering the graphics bit is the Nvidia GeForce GT 630M with 2GB dedicated memory, and is from the Fermi series of chips. Graphics switching, with the Intel HD 3000 graphics kicking in when on battery, or a light load scenario.

The 15.6-inch display (1366 x 768 pixels) is walking a tightrope between reflective and not being reflective, so much so that while we can make out its reflective nature at certain angles, it completely mattes out at other times. Pretty good brightness and contrast levels ensure that the Aspire V3 will work well in most lighting conditions. But the 15.6-inch display means there is adequate real estate to enjoy movies and games, though.USB 3.0 comes natively to the new 7- series chipsets, and among the three USB ports on the device, one of them is the USB 3.0 one. Competence doesn’t end here, with a 500GB hard drive thrown into the mix

8.

Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M3

Acer Aspire Timeline M3-2-336-1.jpg

Features & Specifications

The Intel Core i5 – 2467M that powers the Aspire V5 (read our review) has been carried forward to the Aspire M3 as well – clocked at 1.6GHz, with Turbo Boost mode taking it to 2.3GHz. While the V5 isn’t technically an ultrabook, but the same power package is a bit of a surprise. Not surprisingly, this one retains 4GB of RAM. Ideally, we would have expected 6GB for this price, but the extra money seems to go towards the dedicated graphics card you get with this machine. This is on Intel’s HM77 (Panther Point) chipset.

Speaking of which, Intel’s HD 3000 graphics have a more powerful tag-team partner in the Nvidia GeForce GT640M, which comes with its own 2GB of DDR3 graphics memory. This is from the Fermi series of chips, and not Kepler, as some consumers assume. Not many ultrabooks can boast of this kind of power and graphics capabilities. Samsung’s Series 5 had bucked the trend to a certain extent with the AMD Radeon 7550M (1GB) graphics, but quite clearly, the Aspire M3 shows the way for the future.

The 15.6-inch display has a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. What we really like about it is the brightness it offers. This carries on with the trend set by the previous two Aspire notebooks we tested, and is immensely helpful when you are out and about in bright ambient light. Unfortunately, the display is more reflective than the other ones out there, which does ruin the experience a bit. Colour reproduction is amazing, and we didn’t see any gradation even with the usual suspects – yellow, green and orange. Crispness is also in a generous dose, but there does tend to be some noise around the alphabets at times. Not sure what the reason is for that, because it doesn’t happen all the time.

9.
Toshiba Portege Z830-3-336-4.jpg
Features & Performance
The Intel Core i5 processor clocking at 1.7GHz powers the Portege Z830. Most ultrabooks still seem to be dilly-dallying on whether 4GB of RAM is the way to go, or is it 6GB. Toshiba didn’t bother much with that, and the Z830 comes with 6GB out of the box. The series of benchmark tests clearly put this in a strong third place, with just 0.1 points separating this from the Lenovo IdeaPad U300s which in second place and the HP Folio being the clear leader. Clearly, the Portege Z830 is meant for everyday computing with a heavy dose of grunt. But gaming isn’t really its thing, but then again, it isn’t for most of the ultrabooks out there

Sony Vaio S (VPCSA35GG/T) Review

Features & Performance

To put it mildly, the Sony Vaio S- series (VPCSA35GG/T) has looks that stand out in a crowd. A combination of good performance and good build is more than enough to entice anyone who is looking to buy a slim laptop. We have run out of words to express how happy we are with the matte display! However, a very disappointing battery life and a price tag that is slightly on the higher side gatecrash the party.

We have said this before, and we will say it again - this Vaio laptop looks very impressive on the spec sheet. Intel Core i7 clocking at 2.8GHz with the boost taking it up to 3.5GHz, 6GB of RAM, a 750GB hard drive and switchable graphics
